UNPAID Players- players must have paid their fees by wed 18 March to ensure they can play in the first round of the winter competition. Players who have not paid should do so on Wed night - 5.30-6.30pm.

Coaches/managers Meeting wed 18 March 7.30-8.30pm- At least ONE representative of your team must attend- (training allocations, team gear, team lists confirmation, coach/manager registration)

Mackey Park is now open for training- tuesdays, wednesdays, thursdays 5.30-9pm . If raining on the day, Mackey Park may be closed- check clubhouse phone (95585849) and window or this blog after 3pm .
Wednesdays 5.30-7pm is reserved for u6 to u9 for safety reasons. Older teams should train after 7pm on wednesdays.

Girl's devl clinic with W-League players - APRIL

Dear Soccer Club

NSW Sport & Recreation is excited to announce we will be hosting a Girls Football (soccer) Development Clinic in partnership with the W-League Sydney FC team in the coming school holidays. The clinic will take place at Middleton Park, Yagoona for girls aged 8-14 years from Monday 20th April - Wednesday 22nd April, 9am - 12 noon each day. All coaching will be provided by current players of the W-League.

I am seeking your support in promoting this program to players from your club who may be interested. It's a fantastic opportunity for young female players to build on the essential skills of soccer. Players will be given the opportunity to improve their technique and gain an edge on the competition while also learning some of the latest tips from the best female players in the country.

What better way to get girls motivated for their upcoming soccer season than to be taught by the professionals themselves!
This clinic is suitable for 8-14 year old girls who currently play soccer, but are not yet playing at representative level. Each player taking part in the clinic will receive a complimentary Syndey FC cap, boot bag and poster.

It would be greatly appreciated if you could distribute this flyer to the coaches of current female players.
The 'channels of distribution' always prove to be one of the major barriers we face when promoting these programs to clubs at an association level so if you could assist by forwarding the information about the clinics directly onto coaches of female players that would be greatly appreciated. Once coaches are aware of the clinic hopefully they will pass it onto players and parents alike.
We will also be mailing out a package including a poster and more flyers to your club by the end of next week.

If you require more flyers that can easily be arranged.
Finally, if possible I would also appreciate if you could place the information regarding this clinic on your wesite or alternatively in any newsletter that may be produced in the coming weeks.

Extra training (for anyone) with Dulwich Hill Dynamic Devils!

As the season approaches, Id like to provide an update of the proposed
changes to the Dynamic Devils program.

As part of that program, players could attend either Tuesday or
Thursday night sessions at Mahoney Reserve from 6 - 7pm (we are still
finalising nights for this season currently and should have final
allocations next week).

Norman Tome will be the coach for this group. Norman is a former
Australian international player and current first grade Dulwich Hill
team member and is a licensed coach that coached the under 12
development team in 2008.

These positions would be offered to players within the Red Devils club
throughout the year from the beginning of April until the end of August.

The cost for these sessions would be $12.50 per player per session for
20 sessions giving a total cost for the year of $250.

For weather effected weeks, we can offer make up sessions and / or
indoor sessions (Indoor sessions will attract a small additional cost
estimated at $2 - $3 per player per session).

Could you please advise as a matter of urgency, if you would be
interested in being part of this program.

Marrickville FC is continuing the highly successful junior referee mentoring scheme which last year saw so many of our young players step into an officiating role in the junior games (and earn some pocket money too). Hi all, CDFSA have set a deadline of Monday 1 March for team registrations from U8 to seniors. ALSO we now have to send up full team lists ( in past we could send up incomplete teams and then fill in later). The number of players registering the last 2 weekends has been a bit down and we are worried that players are leaving it too late to register. We will be finalising team lists and grade recommendations on saturday 27 Feburary. Letters and emails were sent to all players in January with dates of registration throughout Feburary. We only have two weeks to confirm returning players. So we need your help.
1. please contact your teams/players asap and confirm who is coming back for 2009 season.
2. encourage your returning players to register this week or next week at the latest ( wed evenings 5.30-7pm at Mackey Park)
3. Let us know which players are returning so we can make up preliminary team lists in advance.
4. Let us know if you need extra players.
5. let us know your preferred team grade/level.
6. If you are not taking a team this year , let us know so we can nominate someone else to contact your 2008 players

Final team groupings will be decided throughout March in consultation with commitee , coaches/managers and players.

NEW Dulwich Hill/MFC development program - Dynamic Devils!

Dulwich Hill and Marrickville Red Devils are pleased to announce the "Dynamic Devils" program for season 2009.

Expanding on the current relationship between the two clubs, the Coaching Staff of Dulwich Hill FC - lead by State League First Grade coach Mark Strachan - are offering professional coaching sessions for players within the Red Devils club.

These sessions for boys and girls from ages Under 7s - Under 16s, will take place at the Red Devils training venues on a Wednesday night for an 8 week period during each school term (excluding term 4).

Depending on the amount of players wishing to participate, boys and girls from Under 7 - Under 10 will train from 5pm - 6pm and boys and girls from Under 11 - Under 16 will train from 6.15pm - 7.30pm.

Bookings will be taken on a term basis and the cost for each player, for the 8 sessions per term, shall be $160.00 per term.

World Masters Games coming to Sydney in October 2009

If you are over 30 and want to play football against competitors from all over the globe, the World Masters Games is for you. The games will be held in Sydney in 2009 from 12 to 18 October.

Division A is for professional or State/National rep level players.
Division B is for any club level player. MEN and WOMEN but NOT MIXED.

In fact, you don't even need to be registered with a club as long as you take out personal insurance.

Teams can be entered in the age division of the youngest team member. Registration is $220 per player and there is no limit on the number of teams until registrations close in July.

The competition will be a round robin during the week with finals on the weekend. The games will be at various venues around Parklea.

MFC supports Special Olympics in Marrickville

Several coaches from Marrickville Football Club have volunteered their time to participate in the "Come and Try Football" day and the "Introduction to Sport" course from October to December 2008 in conjunction with the Special Olympics.

Marrickville Football Club provided course participants with club shirts and other sports gear as part of the course and a great time was had by all according to MFC secretary Ron Royston.

Womens and Girls Development Opportunities

Canterbury District proposes to have a Super League Womens team in the competition in 2010. In the lead up, there will be regular development and gala days through 2009, FOR ALL INTERESTED PLAYERS, at various locations in the District.

Primarily for u11s, u13s, u15s, u17s and older, all girls may be able to participate. The main aim of a district team in the Super League is to provide local development opportunities for girls and women who wish to go one step further than club football.

Dulwich Hill FC/MFC Junior Development Squads- Trials

Dulwich Hill FC in conjunction with Marrickville Red Devils are holding
trials for the Dulwich Hill - Marrickville Junior Development Program
for season 2009, on Sunday November 9th and 16th at Steel Park,
Illawarra Rd Marrickville.

Each trial session will commence at 11 am, for all age groups between
under 8s and under 12s.

In 2009 we will have one team per age group from Under 8s to Under 12s
that will play their games in the Canterbury Association on a Saturday
morning.

Training sessions throughout the season, will be held at Mahoney
Reserve, Wharf Rd Marrickville, on a Tuesday and Thursday evening for
all age groups.

All teams will be coached by their Dulwich Hill coach at both sessions
during the week. The Dulwich Hill coach will also attend the teams
matches each Saturday morning.

Training will commence approximately 4 - 6 weeks prior to the first
competition match and conclude in the week leading up to the final day
of junior competition.

Players will also be profiled throughout the year and two player
evaluation reports shall be provided, one at the half way mark of the
program and then again at the conclusion.

We are also looking to arrange non competition matches, from time to
time, throughout the year with other development squads and private
academy teams.

As always the aim of the program is player development, with a desired
outcome of producing players that will, in time, be selected in our
representative youth league sides.

Volunteer Jobs at MFC - AGM - Shirt and Gear sorters

Our club relies on volunteers for almost everything. Our costs stay low because of parents and players donating their valuable time to help out. There are many volunteer jobs both large and small, during the season and in the lead up. Some only happen once or twice and some require a commitment for a longer period of time.

Jobs range from coaching teams to managing the database, helping in the canteen and clubhouse to being a ground official or referee or arranging sponsorship or promotions.

Some positions will need to be filled at our AGM coming up on October 15th and many many others just need you to register. A more detailed list of jobs and times will be on the website very soon.

If you'd like to help out, in any way large or small, you can sign up at the clubhouse on Presentation Day, come to the AGM, sign up on the website volunteer page (to be added shortly) or simply email your interest to volunteer@marrickville-red-devils.org.au .

In the next two weeks we need help sorting out and checking in all the 2008 gear that's returned on Presentation Day.

Info re Canterbury District Trials for the 2008 North Harbour Tournament.

Girls born in 1995 or 1996 are eligible to trial for the u13 team from 6 to 7pm at Pratten Park.
Girls born in 1997 or 1998 are eligible to trial for the u11 team from 5 to 6pm at Pratten Park.

Friday 25th July and Friday 1st August

Players must arrive 15min early to register for trials. There is a $60 fee for successful players.
North Harbour is a state wide tournament held at Dee Why on 20th and 21st of September.

Calling all girls u10 to u13 interested in representing Canterbury

Canterbury District will shortly be holding trials for 2 teams to send to the Girls North Harbour Invitation Tournament, which is a weekend long, statewide competition at Dee Why on September 20th and 21st.

Two teams, u11 and u13 will be selected during July of the best our district has to offer and the girls selected will get a District uniform. There will be extra training either at Parry Park or Queen Elizabeth Park.

Even if you don't make it into the team for North Harbour, the selection process will be a great experience for our younger players. This is a great start for future representative players. Information about trials will be posted here and on the Canterbury website. Canterbury District Association and Marrickville Football Club extend congratulations to Ron Royston for 50 years of service!

During this period Ron has held every position at the club and until this day still is not only a member of the Executive of Marrickvile but also coaches a winning girl's team

Ron has also held numerous posts at the CDSFA and is presently chairman of the Appeals Committee. We congratulate Ron and his wife, Christine, on the work they have done for Football in our District.

On any Saturday, the suburban park is full of parents yelling out bad advice to their kids. It distracts them and detracts from the child's own game.

Ku-Ring-Gai Association have just had a quiet weekend, where only players were allowed to say anything. If you opened your mouth on the sidelines, you were requested to donate to the Shepherd Centre for the Hearing Impaired.

In summary, small sided games where children learn through experimentation and play are the best way, not just for all children to participate, but for players to develop in to world class players.

Small sided games WITHOUT interference. That's what all the research recommends. That's where the world's top players developed their magic. So let the children PLAY!

There were two initiatives for kids' football last week, one concerned with the environment that moulds our young players and often holds them back, the second a living example of why this cultural change around youth football is so critical to Australia's success as a football nation.

Hands up all those parents who have seen what we can euphemistically call
“inappropriate” parent behaviour at a junior football match? We can now applaud an initiative by the Ku-Ring-Gai Association to begin changing the perceptions and the conduct of everyone associated with junior and youth football, including parents, spectators and coaches.

For an entire weekend no one apart from the players is allowed to say anything. If they do, they are asked to donate to charity – to the Shepherd Centre for the hearing impaired.

And this weekend follows on beautifully from the launch of small sided games (SSG), which is the first step and a critical one. Ultimately four or five a side and pitch measurements are just that, numbers and statistics which ensure our kids have the opportunity to play the game in the best format for their enjoyment and development, with the emphasis on “opportunity”.

The next step must be to capitalise on that chance by educating adults about how their conduct and messages affect the children so every child is able to maximise their experience of playing football.

This is different from the usual “sport rage” campaigns and policies which seek, importantly, to curtail those adults who cannot help taking the importance of an under-eight match far too seriously. “Get rid of it”, kick it out”, “don't do that”, “tackle him” and “pass it” are the usual fare we can hear on any suburban pitch every Saturday, all of these messages restrictive, telling a youngster what not to do and often teling them to take the most basic and, in fact, incorrect option.

Many of these messages are actually setting the youngster up for failure in adult football, since to play at elite level requires the ability to deal with risk, to make and deal with mistakes, and to be able to play comfortably on the ball in all situations.

The truth is that our kids would be far better off if they could play by themselves with parental supervision, not involvement, and would more quickly find their way within the game on what does and down not work.

Indeed, many would become far better players simply by not having an adult telling them not to try something, or why they should take the “percentage option”.

Football for kids is not about percentages – quite the opposite! Rather, it is about joy and risk, testing themselves and their skills, about trying the outrageous and learning how to pull it off, and not being made to understand why great moves hold too much risk.

This message is very confronting for many parents and coaches to find that their presence at their child's football match is not only not required, but is actually a hindrance to their youngster's enjoyment.

Ask yourself this, when Maradona and Pele, Cruyff and Ronaldinho, Messi and Ronaldo learnt to play the game, do you really think their parents were there, constantly berating them for losing the ball, telling them not to go too far forward, not to risk all in attack, or to pass the ball, not “hog” it?

No, in fact as kids, their experience would have been almost totally child-centred, playing with others at school or in the street, probably with no adults within a cooee, with other kids to regulate the game, all able to find their own way.

There is one other football great, Zinedine Zidane, who was quoted as saying that all he learnt as a player both technically and philosophically – meaning the want, need and ability to express himself as a football genius – was learnt on the street with his mates.

Zizou, whose presence in Sydney next month is a beautiful moment for football, is certainly in the top 10 to lace a boot. Think about that, the 10 best players in a sport with a history of more than 100year, the most played game the planet has ever devised, with 208 recognised member countries (more than the UN), 129 female national teams and more than 250 million regular participants. And Zizou ranks in the 10 best every.

So, at a time when Kur-Ring-Gai is endeavouring to encourage their adults to get out of the way and give the game back to the kids, the arrival of a world legend who played the game with a freedom and skill few have ever matched, is timely indeed.

If you get the change to watch him live or on SBS in a few weeks, marvel at his skills but keep in mind that they are not built in a climate of restriction, adult interference and negativity. Quite the opposite.

Small Sided Games for 6s at Hurlstone Park

It's lovely to see the small sided games for 6s roll out at Hurlstone Park. Other clubs in our district have started SSGs for 6s and 7s and in other Districts the full range of SSGs upto 11s and 12s have been rolled out for EVERY club!

Imagine a Saturday morning where you only played at Mackey, with teams of 4 in a round robin competition. Your game was always at 9am or 9.30 and no travelling!

FFA have given Districts a couple of years to adopt Small Sided Games (SSGs) and, at the least, all 6s and 7s games across Canterbury should be SSGs by next year. When I watch the 10s playing on a full size field I really hope that we can adopt the SSGs for the older children sooner, NOT later.

FFA Coaching Conference registrations extended

The deadline for registering for the FFA coaching conference at the Sydney Olympic Park Sports Centre in Homebush, Sydney, over 26 & 27 May 2008. has been extended. 2008 will mark the inaugural year of the FFA Coaching Conference. Recognised within the National Football Development Plan as an area of absolute priority, effective coach education is vital in maximising the enjoyment of players as well as their overall technical development. The objective of the FFA Coaching Conference is to provide further education & development opportunities for coaches both in Australia and overseas. Coaches operating at all levels of the game will be able to attend and choose practical sessions and lectures that are relevant to their needs and those of their players. Presenters from FIFA, Holland, German Football Federation and Brazil as well as domestic experts from FFA and elsewhere have already been confirmed for the conference - many others are expected to join this list of excellent presenters over the coming weeks. Important Behaviour Information for Players, Parents and Coaches

NO coaching from the sidelines!
ALWAYS respect the referee (especially our junior refs)!
TIME OUT is recommended for unruly players at training!
COMPLAINTS and COMPLIMENTS are listened to. Please talk to your club committee (nicely) and/or Club Member Protection & Information Officer (Andra Keay).

IF IN DOUBT - JUST SHOUT "GO RED DEVILS! GO!". Coaching from the sidelines means all yelled instructions from enthusiastic supporters ie. "Go left, look down, pass the ball, turn around!" Your children can not listen to 60 different directions! Only the coach should be coaching during the game and many coaches will choose to give their advice at training and at half time, rather than confuse players during the game. Set a good example to other supporters, STOP YELLING AND START CHEERING!

Our junior referees are doing a great job! They are in training and have a ground official guiding them. Parents and coaches (from any team) should never criticise, argue, debate or 'instruct' them. If you do not agree with or wish to 'instruct' a junior referee, please speak to a club or ground official instead. Abusing or assaulting a refereee is taken VERY seriously and can result in significant fines and suspensions, including criminal charges.

Coaches are volunteers who are giving their time to help players play football. The club endorses the use of TIME OUT from training or games as a behaviour management tool, followed by discussions with parents. If any players (or parents) continue to behave badly at training or games, the club may be asked to mediate. Players may be deregistered if their behaviour continues to disrupt and mediation is unsuccessful. No refund is given in this situation.

Could all parents and managers help your coaches to maintain a friendly respectful atmosphere at training and at games.

Grass Roots Coaching Course 31st March

There will be a Grass Roots Coaching Course at Ewen Park - Tennent Pde, Hurlstone Park on Monday 31st March from 6pm to 9pm.

The course is free to 2008 Canterbury District registered coaches, or costs $27.50. Participants will receive a copy of "Coaching Grass Roots Football" and be taken through a range of activities from the book. At the end of the 3 hour course, participants will have a basic understanding of what kids' coaching is about and what kind of activities to provide at training sessions.

Minimum age 15 years. Application forms available at the clubhouse.

Junior Coaching License Course 29 & 30 March

There will be a Junior Coaching License Course at Fraser Park - 100 Marrickville Rd, Marrickville, from 8.30 to 5pm on Saturday 29th and Sunday 30th March.

This course is free for 2008 registered coaches in the Canterbury District or costs $130. The course runs for 16 hours and covers;

Practice methods, Basic Law and Rooball Rules, Basic technique/skill development, Planning a junior coaching session. Basic attacking and defending play, Role of the coach, Basic safety and first aid, Development of young players, Coaching practice evaluation.

Minimum age 15 years. Application forms available from clubhouse.

Girls vs Mixed - FFA 2008 guidelines

The national and state recommendation is that MIXED competitions are available up to and including under 12’s. After that time, there are male and female competitions.

Females are still able to play in male competitions after the age of 12 - if the supported by the club and association. The responsibility for ensuring that a female is physically capable of competing in a male competition is placed firmly between parents and club officials, as they are the persons who are in the best position to judge each individual case.

Small Sided Games FFA Info for Parents 2008

In 2008, FFA in conjunction with Member Federations, Zones Associations and Clubs will be rolling out Small-Sided Games (SSG). This rollout will be staged commencing primarily with the younger age groups moving through the ages in 2009 and beyond.

In 2008 in excess of 60,000 children will be participating in SSG throughout all Member Federations, to give you an idea below is what is happening in each Member Federation;

Football Federation Victoria – Under 6 – 8 years throughout the state
Northern NSW Football – Under 6 and 7 year old children
Football NSW – Over 16 associations, representing over 30,000 children
Blacktown, Canterbury (Abbotsford JSC, Hurlstone Park SC, Leichhardt Saints SC and Concord SC only), Dubbo, Eastern Suburbs, Eurobodalla, Far South Coast, Gladesville-Hornsby, Granville, Ku-Ring-Gai, Lachlan, Mitchell, Nepean, North West Sydney Womens, Orange, St George, Wagga Wagga and Sutherland associations have all responded to piloting small sided games in various age groups for 2008 in their respected areas.

Dulwich Hill/Marrickville Skills Squad and Junior Info

We are pleased to release the following details regarding the Under 8s to Under 12s program for the coming season. The local Canterbury Association competitions will begin the weekend of April 5th and 6th.

The programs will commence on Tuesday 18th March for both the Under 8s to Under 10s, who will from now on be referred to as the Dulwich Hill /Marrickville Skills Squad, and the Under 11s and Under 12s, who will from now on be referred to as the Dulwich Hill / Marrickville Junior
Development Program.

Training will be at our new training ground Mahoney Reserve which is located at Wharf St Marrickville. A reminder that the Skills Squad will train one night with their Dulwich Hill coach, which will be on Tuesday evenings from 6.00pm to 7.15pm and an additional night (day and time to be confirmed) at Mackey Park with their Marrickville Red Devils coach, who will also attend the Saturday morning match.

The Junior Development Program will train two nights at Mahoney Reserve on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.15pm to 7.30pm. Their coach will also attend the Saturday morning match.

The Canterbury Association has informed us, there will be no break in the competitions during the school holidays and as such training will also continue. If this policy from the association changes, training may follow suit.

Along with the registration form that you have already sent back to us, each player needs to register as a Marrickville Red Devils player in the Canterbury Association. The forms need to be completed but you don't need to pay the fee as this is covered as part of the program. This is to be done at Mackey Park on any of the following dates:

Sat Jan 26th 10am - 3pm
Sat Feb 2nd 10am - 3pm
Tues Feb 5th 6pm - 8pm
Wed Feb 6th 6pm - 8pm
Thurs Feb 7th 6pm - 8pm
Sat Feb 9th 10am - 3pm.

An advertisement of further trials for this program will be placed in the local newspapers in the coming weeks. Those who have already been awarded a position are not required to attend.

An order has been placed for the players training kit. We will advise the date and location of when the kit presentation is to take place soon. We look forward to seeing all the kids improve and enjoy their football in 2008.
